The ‘Skilled Migrant Category’ (SMC) is the most popular way to gaining New Zealand permanent residence. It is a points based system where the principal applicant must meet the 100 point threshold required to submit an Expression of Interest or ‘EOI’.

Points can be gained on age, close relatives in New Zealand, recognised qualifications, relevant work experience and (offer of) skilled employment in New Zealand.

This EOI goes into a large pool of applications where every fortnight a selection is made. The selection is based on the number and type of points claimed. Not everyone who is eligible to submit an EOI necessarily gets selected. If you meet the selection requirements and Immigration New Zealand invites you to apply then you are on your way to applying for residency.

The criteria to assess SMC points entitlement is not as straight-forward as it may appear and most applications require a detailed assessment to clarify what points may be claimed. Most difficulties are experienced in whether any employment satisfies the required residence policy.

You also need to satisfy Immigration New Zealand that you meet the English language requirements and the health and character requirements.
