Tech and IT to be Increased in Canadian Immigration Numbers

An external advisory group of the Canadian government has plans underway to request a further increase of the overall immigration numbers in Canada. The Advisory Council on Economic Growth that is also responsible for advising the Federal Minister plans to ask for 50% increase to raise the immigration figures to over 450,000 migrants per year, for the next 5 years. Also, the group has recommended that skilled workers and entrepreneurs be given easier options to enter into Canada.

The ACEG is of the view that immigration is very important in economy growth both for short and long term projections. This group includes investors, business executives, academics and venture capitalists and their recommendation has already been submitted to the government of Canada on the 20th of October 2016.

If the request is granted, the group intends to keep seeking more ways of improving immigration numbers. The Federal Immigration Minister is very supportive of the move and has gone ahead to make it clear that the government’s ambition is to increase migration numbers substantially in order to aid labor shortages in Canada as well as to fill in for the already aging population. The government has already made a promise to review many of the immigration plans as well as review the processing times. Already, there have been close to 42% decrease in processing times between July 2015 and June 2016.

Tech and IT Industries want Smoother Processes

Also, the advisory group made it known that many IT stakeholders have been frustrated because of the delays in processing which has led to hiring delays. This has caused many to miss out on very key and profitable clients.

Mr. Toby Lutke, an Ottawa based CEO of a Software company, lamented that the Immigration process is too overwhelming. He said that if Canada is to build the best companies in the world, then Canada has to allow the best people to move in as fast as possible. This is why the Tech and IT jobs have been requested to be exempted from the LMIA process which is the main reason for delays.
