Canada is the Most Peaceful Country in the World

A new report from the Global Peace Index (GPI) for the year 2016 has highlighted Canada as one of the safest places to live in the world. Based on this report, the improvements Canada has recorded in the areas of peace can largely be attributed to its progressive immigration policies.

The Global Peace Index report for year 2016 was published this summer by the Institute for Economics and Peace which is the world’s leading think tank when it comes to analyzing peace and its economic value to any country. The IEP is independent, non-profit and non-partisan.

-          It is expected that ranking will still improve over the years

The report has also highlighted that, overall, the world is less peaceful when compared to last year, with violence which has cost lives and 13.3% of global GDP. Also, the average country GPI has declined by 2.44% over the last decade with Turkey and Ukraine highlighted as countries with the sharpest Year-on-year GPI deterioration.

Canada was ranked, however, the 8th country globally amidst a range of other peace-related indices with an overall ‘high state of peace’ remark. Canada’s ‘violence containment’ cost is put at just 2% of the GDP and this is one of the lowest in the world. This high state of peace in Canada is partly attributed to the right institutions, structures and attitudes that create peace and sustain a peaceful society.

While the report puts Europe in the “most peaceful geographical region of the world”, events that occurred recently, when considered in the data and metrics used, will most likely reduce the score of Europe in the GPI. Analysts have said that security concerns are some of the reasons why people consider emigrating from their current homes to other parts of the world and with the high peace ratings of Canada, many people are likely going to be looking towards that part of the world.
