New Zealand Skilled Migrant Program for Skilled Workers

The New Zealand Skilled Migrant Visa can only be applied for after an Invitation to Apply has been received. Before an ITA can be issued, there must have been a submission of Expression of Interest. When an applicant is deemed qualified, such will then be invited to file an application for visa under the New Zealand General Skilled Migrant Program.

Features of the Program

The New Zealand GSM Program is meant to absorb experienced professionals who can come into New Zealand to help contribute to the Growth of the economy. There are basically two options available to convey skilled workers into New Zealand under a short term or permanent basis and they are:

-          The Skilled Migrant Category; and

-          The Work to Residence Category

Out of these two options, the Skilled Migrant Category appears to be the easiest way to migrate. Since this category is point based, there is a fair chance for the qualified to be selected first before those who are less qualified. The system uses specific factors to award points to applicants. Also, the New Zealand Immigration uses some lists in the selection of applicants. These lists are updated regularly.

-          Essential Skills In Demand List: This list is a presentation of the skills that are in high demand in New Zealand. Every migrant is expected to have skills in any of these listed skills to be considered for a visa.

-          Long Term Short Skills List: This is a list of long term short skills. The migrant is also expected to have skilled in at least one occupation listed under the long term short skills list.

-          Immediate Skills Shortage List: This is a list of skills that are in immediate demand. Applicants who have skills in any of such occupations stand a good chance of getting a visa.

Eligibility/Requirement

All who will get an Invitation to Apply must have scored the required number of points. The minimum is 100 points and these points are calculated using the following factors:

-          Work Experience

-          Age

-          Health

-          Character

-          English Language Fluency

-          Close Family Members who are in NZ

-          Recognized graduation

-          Recognized qualification (level 3 to 7)

-          Partner

-          Skill found under the Long Term Short Skills List

Different points are awarded for each of these factors. Anyone who scores less than the minimum is automatically disqualified.
